Dr. Te-Ming “Paul” Tseng

Dr. Tseng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Zoology, and Biotechnology Honors from Bangalore University, India, and a Master of Science in Biotechnology from Allahabad Agricultural Institute – Deemed University, India. He holds a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology focusing on Weed Science from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
Dr. Tseng’s postdoctoral research included a position at the University of Arkansas, focusing on weed physiology, and another at Purdue University, specializing in quantitative plant pathology. His current research focuses on identifying herbicide-resistant mechanisms in plants and characterizing competitive traits in weeds, emphasizing understanding the underlying genes and biochemical pathways.
In his academic role, Dr. Tseng teaches courses such as "Weed Biology and Ecology," "Herbicide Physiology and Biochemistry," and "Environmental Fate of Herbicides." He has mentored and graduated numerous students, including 9 Master’s students, 9 Doctoral students, 12 international visiting students, and 2 Postdocs. He advises 3 Doctoral and 2 Master’s candidates and supervises 1 postdoctoral researcher and 3 international visiting scholars.
Dr. Tseng has been highly successful in securing research funding totaling $8,905,168 since 2015. He has authored 76 peer-reviewed journal articles, 6 book chapters, and 182 conference abstracts. He participates in grant reviews for several prestigious organizations and serves on the Editorial Boards of journals, including Weed Science, Crop Science, Plant Gene (Elsevier), and Frontiers in Plant Science. He holds leadership roles as Editor of the Southern Weed Science Society (SWSS) and Treasurer of the International Weed Science Society (IWSS), and he represented the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) in the Technical Advisory Group for Biological Control Agents of Weeds, a USDA APHIS unit.
International Service: Dr. Te-Ming “Paul” Tseng’s contributions to the international scientific community are substantial and multifaceted. As the Treasurer of the International Weed Science Society (IWSS), he plays a crucial role in managing the organization’s finances and supporting its mission to advance weed science globally. His research collaborations span multiple countries, and he supervises visiting scholars from Brazil, India, Iran, and Malaysia. Dr. Tseng’s commitment to international research is reflected in his active participation in global conferences and his role in organizing international scientific meetings. He has presented his work at numerous international forums, fostering collaborations and knowledge exchange with researchers worldwide.
Dr. Tseng’s contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the WSSA Early Career Outstanding Scientist Award, MSU Excellence in Teaching Award, WSSA Outstanding Reviewer Award, MSU Outstanding Faculty Service Award, and AASIO Early Career Agricultural Scientist Award. A committed member of the Southern Weed Science Society and the Weed Science Society of America, Dr. Tseng has actively participated in IWSC/SWSS/WSSA meetings since 2008. He is married to Sally and has two children.
